Spelling / Vocabulary

Dictionary Movement Game

Great for vocab words that are being introduced.  Have the students open a dictionary or glossary and lay it on their desk.  The students spread out around the room and do a movement to music.  These movements include crab walk, crazy walk, jog, hop, skip, sidestep, march, twist, or jumping jacks.  While music is played, they do the activity, and when the music is quiet, they go to the nearest book on a desk and look for the word that is called out by the teacher.  Once a student finds the word, they raise their hand, and when called on, they give the page number so everyone can get there.  The person says the word, part of speech, and definition.  Then the word is discussed as a whole class, and the process is repeated with another type of movement.

Find the Word

Finding Spelling and Vocab words throughout the day.  Have a list of each student.  The students have the whole week to find a vocab word and a spelling word throughout their day.  When they show you the word, they get a reward or ticket.  Cross off their name when they report it.

Show, Don’t Tell

Students are given the list of vocabulary words and the definitions.  Students are assigned a word (individually or in small groups).  Students draw a visual of the word and figure out a motion to show the word.  Students come to the front of the class.  Then the student ats out the motion.  The rest of the class guesses what word the student has illustrated and acted out.  The class then does the motion.  At then does the motion.  At the end of class, teacher takes up the pictures.  For a quick review the next day, the teacher shows the pictures, and the students act out the motion.
