Consequences

The student is given a warning that the behavior that is being displayed is inappropriate. This is usually done on a one-on-one basis.

Second Behavior

The student's name is put on the wasting learning time board owing a talking lesson or a lap.

Third Behavior

The student's number is circled on the wasting learning time board signifying owing a talking lesson and a quiet lunch.

Fourth Behavior

Note or call home to parents

Fifth Behavior

A discipline report is completed

Classroom Management

Call and Response Chants

Students learn a series of chants where the teacher calls out a line, and the students respond with the next line. This is a quick way to get the class' attention.

Good Work Board

After passing back papers each Friday, students choose their work they are most proud of. This work is placed on the Good Work Board in the room to be displayed throughout the week.

Plot-It

Good work is rewarded with being able to plot your number on the Plot-It array. Every two weeks, a point is drawn, and that person can choose from a variety of prizes.

Quiet Seat

Every day, I secretly select a student to be the Quiet Seat. At the end of the day, if the student has been well-behaved and hard-working, I reveal the Quiet Seat and reward him or her with a small treat. If, on the other hand, the Quiet Seat did not follow the classroom rules during the day, a treat is not earned and his or her identity is kept a secret.

Talking Lesson

Talking lessons are a way to document inappropriate talking during class time. A short piece of text is copied, signed, and dated by the student, and it is kept in a file to be shared during parent/teacher conferences.

Verbal Praise

Giving a student a "Way to Go" can really brighten the mood and atomsphere of the room.
