Our Classroom Pet
Meet Scrappy, our classroom pet. Scrappy is a hieroglyphic cooter red-eared slider turtle. Scrappy as donated to our classroom by one of Meadow's teachers, and are we ever thankful!. We have had Scrappy in our classroom since September 16, 2008, and I cannot wait to experience the joys of having a pet in our classroom for many years to come. Here you can find out more about him, learn about his home in our classroom, and watch him grow!
What does Scrappy eat?
Right now Scrappy eats a mixture of tiny shrimp, turtle pellets, and small krill. As he grows, he will begin to eat small fish. Scrappy eats several times a week, and it is one of our students' job to feed him during the week.
How big is Scrappy?
When we got Scrappy, he was about the size of a silver dollar. Over time, he will get much larger, growing to the size of a normal turtle.
What is the lifespan of a turtle?
Turtles as pets can live 30 or more years. This is a great reason to have Scrappy as a classroom pet; many years of my students may enjoy having Scrappy in our classroom.
